As a young family, with young children, becoming debt-free can be hard.
You need to make sure your children lack nothing, and paying debt quickly might not even be at the top of your priorities.
And then you hear good debt… “What’s good debt anyway?”
Debt often carries a negative connotation, conjuring images of financial strain and stress. However, not all debt is detrimental. When managed wisely, certain types of debt can serve as powerful tools to enhance your financial wellbeing and pave the way to success.
I have created a simple guide for you to understand not only how you can leverage good debt to your advantage, but also a strategy on how to make this an integral part of your family budgeting plan.

Understanding Good vs. Bad Debt
When you think of family debt, typically the following come to mind:
a. Home Loan
b. Car Loan
c. Buy Now Pay Later Loan
d. Education Loan
The above are all in some way or another linked to kinds of family debt.
But would you classify them all as bad debts? Bad debt refers to borrowing that doesn’t generate future value, like high-interest credit card debt used for depreciating assets.
On the other hand, good debt can be seen as an investment in something that has the potential of generating income over time. Therefore, mortgages for property, loans for business ventures, and even an education loan that can lead to an increase in salary, can be classified as good debt.
Any debts that lead to increased earning potential and wealth accumulation is a ‘good’ type of debt, and an essential part of any family budgeting plan.

Don’t be afraid… Certain debt can make you stronger!
Many make the mistake of fearing any kind of debt.
Allow me to present you with the following options where I see the benefit of debt:
- Educational Advancement: Investing in education through student loans can enhance your skills and qualifications, leading to better job opportunities and higher income.
- Homeownership: Taking on a mortgage allows you to own property, which can appreciate over time, building equity and providing financial stability.
- Entrepreneurial Ventures: Business loans enable you to start or expand a business, potentially leading to significant financial returns and personal fulfilment.
When I started my own business, I took a small loan… not because I didn’t have enough liquid funds to pay for the expenses, but because I preferred utilising the money through a loan, because the potential ROI (return on investment) for my decision was enough to convince me to take that step.
It only took me a few weeks to be proven correct. The same can apply to you – remember, even if you have the money, it doesn’t mean that you cannot utilise loans… the most successful people utilise loans all the time, not because they don’t have enough money to fund their projects, but because they understand how to leverage good debt to their advantage. The wealthiest and most financially savvy individuals don’t avoid debt—they strategically use it to grow their assets, increase cash flow, and take advantage of opportunities without depleting their savings.
Think about it this way: if you have €100,000 in cash, you could either spend it all on a single investment or use a portion of it as leverage—taking out a loan at a low-interest rate while keeping your money working for you in other high-yield opportunities.
This is exactly why business owners, real estate investors, and even top executives embrace good debt—it’s a tool that allows them to scale, invest, and build long-term wealth without tying up all their capital.
The key difference between good debt and bad debt is control—when you understand how to borrow smartly, you can create opportunities rather than financial burdens.
Strategies for Managing Good Debt
Here are some financial tips for couples when it comes to considering good debt in their family budgeting plans:
- Assess Return on Investment (ROI): Before taking on debt, evaluate the potential returns. Will the debt lead to increased income or asset appreciation?
- Maintain a Healthy Debt-to-Income Ratio: Ensure your monthly debt obligations don’t overshadow your income. A balanced ratio keeps finances manageable.
- Prioritise High-Interest Debts: Focus on paying off debts with higher interest rates first to reduce overall interest expenses. This in turn leaves more open opportunities to consider good debt options.
Real-Life Example: Transforming Debt into Success
“Luca, should I take a loan to buy an apartment to rent?”
That was one of many questions I receive in a popular column I head with a top media house in Malta.
The person, which for privacy’s sake we’ll call Bernard, was in a dilemma:
“I am 40, I feel settled, my earnings are growing yearly, and yet, I wish to have another property to rent out. I think it would be a viable investment for the family. But I am afraid of the loan. Being debt-free, like I am now, feels so good, I don’t want to lose that feeling.”
I had the opportunity to meet Bernard in-person.
“I understand that,” I said. “It is really a choice you have to make. Will you continue living like you are, and make small investments along the way, or will you take a bold step, which, yes, can mean taking another loan, but you will be in a much stronger position as time passes, you won’t only have money coming in from rent, but also your property has huge probability of appreciating in value.”
To make it clear – no position was a bad position in this case. Bernard could have continued saving and investing without taking a loan to buy another property – through compounding he would still have managed to accumulate a nice pot.
But Bernard’s real issue was fearing debt, because his parents had ingrained it in him – debt is always bad.
In this case it wasn’t, in this case it was good, because Bernard was going to create wealth out of it!
