Bitcoin Investing: Should You Risk It All Like My Friend Did?

Blog
A thoughtful middle-aged man sitting at a café table with a laptop and a coffee, symbolising reflection on financial decisions like bitcoin investing.

“I sold my house to buy Bitcoin.”

That’s what my friend told me over coffee two years ago.

At the time, I thought he was mad.

Turns out… he might have been a genius.

This is a real scenario, and the question now being asked is a powerful one — and you might have wondered it too:

Should I follow in his footsteps?

Let’s unpack this, because it’s not just about crypto — it’s about risk, mindset, regret, and understanding your strategy.

The Story

A man in his 30s — a lawyer, with a stable income, a family, a house — watched his friend do something unimaginable.

His friend, a Learning Support Educator, sold his fully paid €500,000 home and poured almost all of it into Bitcoin and a few other cryptocurrencies.

At the time, Bitcoin was around €30,000.
Today? His portfolio is now worth nearly €2 million. He’s renting for now, planning to buy a bigger house — and still has plenty left over to invest further.

And the lawyer?
He’s proud of his achievements but can’t help feeling like he missed the boat.

“What’s the point of my law degree and all the years of hard work when such a thing happens?”

This was the feeling of the letter I received — and perhaps it’s something you’ve felt before when others strike gold.

The Temptation of Bitcoin Investing

This isn’t an uncommon scenario. Bitcoin investing has created stories like this across the world.

But here’s the truth:
You’re only hearing the success stories.
You’re rarely hearing about the people who lost everything trying to chase them.

So what do you do?

Do you go all in and sell your home?

Do you stick with your safe, slow-growing investments?

Or is there a middle ground?

Here’s My Take

First, let’s acknowledge something important:
What your friend did cannot easily be replicated.

He had conviction.
He likely spent hundreds of hours researching, understanding the technology, the cycles, the risks.

That’s not something you copy just because it worked — it’s something you commit to because you believe in it too.

You, on the other hand, are just starting your journey in crypto.
And that’s okay.

But let me be very clear:
Selling your house to buy Bitcoin is NOT a good place to start.

It’s not just about whether the price goes up or down. It’s about your ability to emotionally survive the swings.

Could you hold steady if the market drops 50% tomorrow?

Could you go on living — renting with a family — and still believe in your decision?

If the answer is no — then this is not your game to play at high stakes.

A Smarter Way to Begin

If you’re drawn to bitcoin investing, don’t ignore that instinct.
Just channel it better.

Here’s what I suggest:

1. Educate yourself.
Spend 10–15 minutes a day reading, listening to podcasts, or watching content by experts. Learn about wallets, exchanges, taxes, risks. You don’t need to know it all — but you do need to start.

2. Allocate responsibly.
Instead of selling assets, reallocate a small portion of your investable money. Start with 1% or 2% of your net worth in Bitcoin or crypto — nothing more.

3. Automate your entries.
Use monthly deposits. Whether it’s €100 or €500, put it in consistently rather than timing the market. This strategy is called dollar-cost averaging — and it works.

4. Monitor without obsession.
Check in monthly. Don’t fall into the trap of daily price watching. It causes anxiety and impulsive decisions.

The Emotional Side of Investing

Your feelings are valid.

It’s okay to feel a little jealousy, some regret — even confusion about what all your years of hard work were for.

But don’t let those emotions lead your financial decisions.
You didn’t “lose.” You simply walked a different path.

Bitcoin investing is not about revenge.
It’s about strategy, belief, and emotional control.

And remember:
The same friend who bet it all and won, could have also lost it all.
Would you still have envied him then?

My Final Thought

You are not behind.
You’re exactly where you need to be.

But if you want to start, start smart.
Not by copying others, but by building your own conviction.

That’s how you protect your present and build your future.
