“Just ask ChatGPT what to invest in.”
That’s the kind of advice floating around everywhere lately.
And on the surface, it sounds great.
Open ChatGPT, type in “best ETFs to invest in,” and let the AI do its thing.
But here’s the truth most people don’t realise:
It’s not just about asking ChatGPT. It’s about how you ask.
In fact, poor prompts lead to generic answers…
Which lead to confusion, wasted time, and potentially risky decisions.
Let me show you the difference the right prompt can make.
Scenario 1: Jack’s Generic ChatGPT Experience
Jack logs into ChatGPT and types:
“What are the best ETFs to invest in?”
ChatGPT gives him a list:
- SPY (S&P 500)
- QQQ (Tech-heavy NASDAQ)
- VTI (Total US Market)
- ARKK (Innovation-focused fund)
All good ETFs. But here’s the problem:
➡️ Jack never told ChatGPT his age
➡️ He didn’t mention his goals (income? growth?)
➡️ He never shared his risk appetite or timeframe
So while the response might impress him at first, it’s actually surface-level.
Jack is back at square one — overwhelmed, with no clear direction.
Scenario 2: Susan’s Smarter ChatGPT Strategy
Now meet Susan.
Before typing anything, she’s clear on her goals:
- She’s 37
- Wants to invest for retirement in 20 years
- Prefers moderate risk with a mix of income and growth
- Values sustainability and ethical investing
Susan types:
“I’m a 37-year-old investor with a 20-year time horizon. I want a balanced portfolio of ETFs with moderate risk, income + growth potential, and an ESG tilt. Can you suggest options and highlight pros/cons?”
The result?
ChatGPT responds like an assistant who knows her:
- Suggests accumulating ETFs like CSPX and ESG-screened funds
- Highlights differences between accumulating vs distributing versions
- Mentions currency exposure risk (as she’s EU-based)
- Explains tax implications of dividends
- Even outlines sample allocations based on her profile
See the difference?
The Real Power of ChatGPT Isn’t in the Data – It’s in the Dialogue
ChatGPT is powerful.
But it doesn’t read your mind.
It mirrors back the quality of your questions.
If you feed it vague prompts, you’ll get vague answers.
If you guide it with clarity and context, it becomes a personal financial assistant.

Why I Care About This
I’ve been using ChatGPT since the beginning — and believe me, I’ve made mistakes.
At first, I relied on surface-level questions. I got lost in data. I trusted answers too quickly.
But over time, I realised that AI can be transformative —
If used wisely, with the right framework and human insight.
I’m still the decision-maker.
But ChatGPT helps me ask smarter questions.
And that, my friends, is where the magic happens.
Want a Head Start?
Here are 3 prompts you can try today:
1️⃣ “Can you explain the risks and benefits of investing in an accumulating ETF like CSPX if I’m a 35-year-old EU-based investor?”
2️⃣ “Compare VUSA vs IWDA for long-term investing, considering tax implications and dividend reinvestment.”
3️⃣ “What does a balanced ETF portfolio look like for someone seeking moderate risk and retirement in 15 years?”
Let ChatGPT guide the discussion — but let you be the captain.
Final Note: This Isn’t Investment Advice
This is about learning how to use AI as an educational companion.
Always do your own research, and speak to a licensed advisor before investing.
