How Long Will My Retirement Money Last?

A 21-Year-Old Asks the Right Question Early

“You’ve got time on your side.”

We’ve all heard that phrase thrown around when it comes to investing young. But how many 21-year-olds actually act on it?

According to Eurostat, only 1 in 5 young adults in the EU actively save for the long term. Most believe retirement planning is a concern for the future—not for students balancing part-time jobs and exams.

But here’s the truth:

The sooner you start, the longer your money has to grow—and the less pressure you’ll feel later.
In fact, when it comes to answering the question “How long will my retirement money last?”—the earlier you begin, the more control you have over the answer.

Let’s break this down through the story of a young guy who’s already thinking about financial freedom before he even graduates.

A Question from a 21-Year-Old That Most 40-Year-Olds Never Ask

“I’m 21, still studying, and working 15 hours a week. I’ve built an emergency fund of €2,000 and started investing in ETFs like QQQ and VOO. I’m now making a small profit, but I know I need a better long-term strategy. Where do I go from here?”

I’ll be honest—I was impressed.

Most people don’t start asking these questions until they’re staring down the barrel of a mortgage, kids, and no savings.

But this young student is doing everything right. And yet, he’s still unsure. Why?

Because money management isn’t just about saving or investing once—it’s about staying consistent and knowing why you’re doing it.

Here’s What You Need Instead…

Think of your retirement like a future version of yourself you need to start feeding today.

Whether your money will last into your 80s or run out at 67 depends less on your salary and more on your habits.
The magic lies in compound interest—the long-term snowball effect of putting money aside consistently, no matter how small the amount.

You don’t need to invest €500 per month to start. Even €50–€100 a month into an ETF can have a massive impact over time, thanks to dollar-cost averaging—buying consistently, even when prices fluctuate.

I explained to the student:

“Don’t worry about how much. Focus on how often. Make investing as normal as brushing your teeth.”

Also, don’t underestimate the emotional benefit of building these habits early. Financial stability creates mental space. Instead of worrying about whether you’ll have enough in retirement, you’ll already have a system in place. This peace of mind alone is worth its weight in gold.

When you’re investing with a long-term goal in mind, it’s not just about numbers. It’s about designing a life that aligns with your values. That could mean retiring early, switching careers mid-life, or simply never stressing about money again.

My Own Story: When I Had to Hit Pause

A few years ago, my daughter was diagnosed with sensory challenges. My wife had to stop working to be with her. Overnight, we went from two incomes to one.

We paused our investments.

But we didn’t give up—we restarted once life settled down.

The point? Financial life isn’t linear. You’ll have pauses, setbacks, curveballs. And that’s okay. Just keep restarting.

Another period where I had to pause was when I shifted careers and took a leap into the unknown. It was risky, and I felt nervous every single day. But because I had built solid habits before that change, I had a cushion that allowed me to take that leap. That’s what investing early does—it buys you freedom later.

Final Thoughts: Start Small. Stay Consistent. Ask the Big Questions.

So—how long will your retirement money last?

It depends on when you start… and if you keep going.

If you’re in your 20s, you’ve already won half the battle by being aware. If you’re in your 30s or 40s, it’s not too late. But it is time to stop waiting.

Ask yourself:

  • Can I set aside €50–€200 a month starting this month?
  • What is my investing goal—early retirement, travel, security, freedom?
  • What’s stopping me from starting?

Once you know your ‘why,’ the ‘how’ becomes easier.

Remember, wealth isn’t just built with knowledge—it’s built with intention.
