Have you ever read The Psychology of Money book, followed every piece of advice from Warren Buffett to Ramit Sethi, and still felt like you’re getting nowhere?
You’re not alone.
I recently received a message from someone who’d done everything “right”: made a budget, slashed unnecessary spending, followed investment plans, and even attended multiple financial workshops. And yet, they felt stuck. Frustrated. Left behind by a friend who earned the same salary but was miles ahead financially.
And that’s where we need to pause…
Because the truth?
The Psychology of Money book reveals that how we behave with money often trumps what we know about money.
Why Knowing More Doesn’t Always Mean Doing Better
I want to share something that many so-called gurus often overlook:
Personal finance isn’t just about maths.
It’s about emotions, habits, and the deeply rooted beliefs we carry from childhood.
You might have read all the books, followed the same steps as someone else, and still struggled — not because you’re lazy, or undisciplined — but because your relationship with money is different.
Let me explain.
Your Money Story Starts Early
As I shared with the person who reached out:
“When the problem goes deep, the solution must go just as deep.”
During childhood, we form beliefs around money — often without realising it. Maybe you saw money as scarce, or maybe it was something to be spent quickly before it disappeared. These emotional imprints live inside us and silently shape our behaviour as adults.
And the worst part?
We beat ourselves up for not “being good with money” — when in truth, we’ve just never been shown how to rewrite those stories.
A Different Kind of Financial Exercise
Before changing your investment strategy, I recommend a different exercise:
Take 5–10 minutes and journal:
- What was your first memory involving money?
- Did money represent joy, guilt, stress, or freedom?
- How did your family treat conversations about money?
- Was there reward or shame attached to spending?
These questions aren’t random. They help you uncover what’s really driving your money behaviour — not just what your spreadsheet says.
The Psychology of Money Book… and Your Real Life
In Morgan Housel’s best-selling Psychology of Money book, he explains that financial success is not just about knowledge. It’s about how you behave — and your behaviour is shaped by things like your upbringing, trauma, risk tolerance, and even personality.
“Doing well with money has little to do with how smart you are and a lot to do with how you behave.” – Morgan Housel
So if you’ve read the Psychology of Money book and still feel stuck, you’re not broken.
You’re just human.
It means you’re ready to move from information… to transformation.
The Path Forward (That Has Nothing to Do With Budgeting Apps)
Here’s what I’ve seen work for clients in your shoes:
- They stop comparing. Your friend’s financial path is not your benchmark.
- They start healing. Not from overspending — but from what caused it.
- They build new habits. Slowly. Kindly. One consistent change at a time.
Because when you change how you feel about money, everything else becomes easier: the saving, the investing, the discipline.
You don’t need another tip. You need a shift.
And I promise — it’s possible.
