Finance Coach Tips: What to Do When Your Partner Spends Shared Savings

Blog
A man and woman sitting on a sofa looking tense and emotionally distant, reflecting financial disagreement or conflict in a relationship.

You’ve been saving together for something deeply emotional.

Something shared.

Something life-changing.

Then one day, the person you love makes a solo financial decision—and just like that, your shared timeline shifts.

This is exactly what happened to a woman who reached out to me after discovering that her husband had used part of their IVF savings to buy a €35,000 car he had long wanted.

To her, it felt like betrayal.

To him, it felt like planning for a growing family.

Both were acting on what they believed was right—yet they ended up on completely different emotional pages.

As a finance coach, I see this scenario all the time. The numbers are rarely the issue.

The real tension sits beneath the surface: in mismatched priorities, unclear boundaries, and unspoken expectations.

The Problem Beneath the Purchase

The couple had committed to saving for IVF. It was expensive, and the goal was to be financially ready within two years. But when her husband spotted the car he’d been dreaming about, he decided to go for it—without consulting her, and without considering the emotional impact of that decision.

He justified it by saying:

  • “We still need a car for our future family.”
  • “It’ll only delay us by a few months.”
  • “I’ll replace the money once my bonus comes in.”

And while those statements might seem practical on the surface, they miss the real point.

It’s not about whether the purchase made sense.

It’s about the fact that he made it alone.

Where Couples Financially Drift

In money coaching, I refer to these moments as financial drift. It happens when couples slowly begin to steer in different directions, not because of ill intent, but because of unspoken beliefs.

Your partner may think they’re helping — buying a safer, more reliable car for future family outings. But if that act comes at the cost of a mutually agreed dream, it can leave you feeling like your voice doesn’t matter.

One partner may feel financially optimistic. The other feels the urgency of a biological clock. Without communication, those realities crash instead of connect.

This is why financial intimacy matters.

The Role of a Finance Coach

A finance coach doesn’t just help people save more or invest better. We help couples listen to one another.

What drives each person? What are their money stories? How do past experiences influence today’s decisions?

In this case, perhaps the husband grew up without financial freedom, and the car symbolised success or security. Meanwhile, the wife was focused entirely on their shared future—timing, biology, readiness.

By sitting down together (and sometimes with a coach), these layered motivations can be uncovered and understood.

Rebuilding After the Blow

Here’s what I recommend:

1. Hold space for both your truths.
Let your husband know that this wasn’t about the car—but about what it cost emotionally. Give him room to explain, not defend.

2. Co-create your values.
Ask each other: What does money mean to you? What scares you about not having enough? What does it feel like to delay a dream?

3. Implement clear rules.
For example: Any transaction over €500 requires a joint discussion. It’s not about control—it’s about co-ownership.

4. Consider separate goal pots.
You can still have joint goals, but each of you might benefit from having individual accounts for personal dreams too.

5. Talk monthly, not only during conflict.
Create a recurring “money date.” Just 30 minutes. With snacks, a calm setting, and openness.

Where Do You Go From Here?

What this woman experienced wasn’t just a setback. It was a moment of realisation: that even shared dreams need structured communication and agreed-upon boundaries.

As a finance coach, I believe this situation—though painful—can actually become a turning point. A chance to stop running on assumptions and start leading with intention.

Because love needs more than shared goals.

It needs shared decisions. Shared timelines. Shared understanding.

And no matter how emotional the journey is—especially when it involves something as sacred as IVF—your financial plan must reflect the respect and alignment you want in your relationship.
