You’ve just been offered a major career upgrade abroad—more money, new experiences, a bigger title. It sounds like a dream.
But what happens when that dream clashes with your current life?
That’s exactly what a graphic designer from Malta is facing. He’s on a €90K salary, plus side gigs earning another €10K. Now, his company is offering him a position in the US with a base salary of €130K, likely to grow even more within a few years. They’re even offering to subsidise part of the move.
It sounds like a no-brainer, right?
But there’s a twist: He’s also a father. His son just started school and is thriving. His wife has a fulfilling job she loves. Uprooting would mean disrupting all of that.
And that’s where financial coaching meets real life.
Because sometimes, it’s not just about the numbers. It’s about the story behind them.
More Money vs. More Stability
You see, what this designer is really struggling with isn’t just the move.
It’s this:
“What if I take the leap… and it doesn’t work out?”
“What if my family hates it there?”
“What if I want to come back… but can’t afford to?”
These are very real fears. And they’re exactly why I always emphasise the importance of having a fully funded emergency fund—not just for rainy days, but for bold decisions.
When your emergency fund is strong, you can experiment with life.
You can try that job abroad.
Take that career risk.
Pursue that passion project.
Because if it doesn’t work out, you’re not starting from zero.
You’re starting from safety.
Why a Fully Funded Emergency Fund is Your Safety Net
We tend to think of emergency funds only in terms of disaster – job loss, health issues, broken appliances.
But I want to reframe that.
A fully funded emergency fund isn’t just a cushion for survival – it’s a platform for freedom.
It’s the difference between:
- “I can’t afford to leave this job” vs. “I’m ready to explore what’s next.”
- “I have to say no to this opportunity” vs. “Let’s give this a try.”
In this case, the designer is understandably cautious. He’s not in a bad situation now—his family is happy, his job is stable, and income is flowing. But sometimes, good can get in the way of great.
Having a fully funded emergency fund gives you the breathing space to make decisions from a place of power—not panic.
What Does “Fully Funded” Actually Mean?
For most people, this means having 3 to 6 months’ worth of essential expenses saved. For others, especially those with families or single incomes, it may need to stretch further – 6 to 12 months.
In your case, considering the costs of relocating and the emotional impact of the move, a higher buffer may be wise.
Think about:
- Flights home if things don’t go well
- Extra childcare or support in a new country
- Time to search for new work if your wife also decides to leave her job
Here’s What I’d Suggest
- Do a trial run. Can the new job offer a trial period or a 6-month review window? That gives you and your family an exit strategy if needed.
- Review your emergency fund. If it’s not yet fully funded, consider using the next few months to top it up before the big move. This gives you financial confidence if anything doesn’t go as planned.
- Start early conversations with your wife. Not just about logistics, but about hopes, fears, and what this move could mean for your family vision.
- Test small. Perhaps visit the US for a few weeks, scout schools, and experience local life before making a final call.
You’re Not Just Chasing a Paycheque
When it comes to wealth, most people talk about money.
But those who build true wealth think about margin – space to explore, to rest, to try again if needed.
That’s what a fully funded emergency fund buys you.
And that’s how you make bold decisions, wisely.
