How Women Financial Advisors Are Empowering Survivors of Financial Abuse

Blog
A determined young woman in her late twenties stands outside an urban apartment block, symbolising resilience and independence in the face of housing affordability challenges.

“You won’t survive without me.”

That’s what she was told. Again and again. Until she almost believed it.

For over 20 years, her husband took care of all their finances. And for a long time, that was fine. But something changed.

He became controlling, explosive, and used money as a tool for manipulation.

She felt trapped. Alone. Unemployable. Unseen.

But amidst all the darkness, she clung to one thing that brought her hope—her writing. Secret stories she penned at night. Encouragement from online writing groups. Dreams of building a new life, one sentence at a time.

This is not just her story. It’s one I’ve heard too many times.

And today, I want to talk to the women who feel stuck in similar situations—and to introduce you to the powerful role that women financial advisors can play in helping you reclaim your power.

What is Financial Abuse—and Why Don’t We Talk About It?

Financial abuse is a silent epidemic. In the UK, at least 1 in 5 women experience it. In Malta, we don’t even have the stats—but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

The abuser may:

  • Control all access to money
  • Refuse to give you “permission” to spend
  • Make you feel like you’re incapable of managing finances
  • Use your financial dependence to keep you from leaving

And because it rarely involves bruises, people often don’t believe it—or even recognise it for what it is.

But you know it. You feel it. And you deserve better.

Women Financial Advisors: More Than Just Numbers

One of the most powerful ways out of a financially abusive situation is through knowledge and support. And this is where women financial advisors are making a huge difference.

More and more women are turning to female financial coaches, planners, and advisors because:

  • They feel understood
  • There’s less judgment about not knowing things
  • They receive holistic support—addressing mindset, goals, and emotions, not just spreadsheets

These advisors are helping women:

  • Open their own bank accounts (safely and discreetly)
  • Plan for separation and post-divorce life
  • Create freelance income streams
  • Rebuild credit scores
  • Reclaim their financial voice

What Steps Can You Take If You’re In This Situation?

If any part of this story resonated with you, here’s what I suggest:

1. Seek Support Now

Organisations like Agenzija Appoġġ or Caritas Malta offer discreet support to survivors of domestic and financial abuse. You don’t need to face this alone.

2. Open a Private Bank Account

If it’s safe to do so, begin setting up your own account. A women financial advisor can walk you through the steps in a way that protects your safety and privacy.

3. Leverage Your Talents

Your writing isn’t just therapy—it’s a skill. Platforms like Upwork and Fiverr allow you to start small, offering content or creative writing services remotely. Don’t discount your potential. Even volunteering for content-based roles can give you the experience you need to gain confidence and build a portfolio.

4. Find Work-Friendly Communities

Reach out to women-led communities. Whether it’s a career group, women-in-business network, or financial literacy group, being around others who understand your journey is game-changing.

5. Get a Plan in Place

Book a session with a financial advisor who specialises in working with women. If you can’t afford a full-time planner, look for financial coaches who offer sliding scale or free first sessions. Many of us—including myself—started by helping women just like you.

Remember: You Are Not Alone

Just because no one around you talks about it doesn’t mean you’re imagining things. The silence doesn’t make it less real.

But it also doesn’t make it permanent.

You can build a new chapter—one step at a time.

And women financial advisors, financial coaches, and support networks are here to help you do just that.
